Carmelo 'better fit than LeBron' for the Knicks

Not only does Carmelo Anthony apparently have his heart set on playing in New York, but a close confidant of the NBA superstar told The Post yesterday that he is a better fit for the Big Apple than LeBron James.

"Nothing would bother him," the confidant said of Anthony playing here. "The media wouldn't bother him because he really likes people. The pressure wouldn't bother him because he loves to have the game in his hands. Nothing bothers him."

Carmelo could force trade to Knicks this season: report
Knicks
It seems more and more likely Carmelo Anthony will not sign a contract extension with the Nuggets, which likely will force the team to trade him, perhaps to the Knicks.

ESPN.com reported last night that Anthony is "going to make it real clear that he's not coming back" to Denver, according to an NBA source.

"Both Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke and Anthony already are well aware that they don't have a future together, sources say. That became clear to Kroenke at a reception after Anthony's July 11 (wedding) to La La Vasquez in Manhattan," the report says.

Warriors, Hornets, Pacers in Amundson hunt
Free Agents

It’s not going to get people buzzing like the futures of Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul do in our post-LeBron world. Not even close.

Yet it does rank as one of the growing curiosities in the NBA this summer:

Why, on Aug. 18, is Louis Amundson still available?

Shannon Brown could be signed by the end of this week.

But with who? Brown’s agent, Mark Bartelstein wouldn’t get into details Monday, only to say that he and Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak continue to talk.

“We’re working on it. It’s a work in progress,” Bartelstein said.

‘Friendly’ dinner for Bosh and Wade
Free Agents
Dwyane Wade has confirmed he had dinner with Chris Bosh during a gathering in Los Angeles last week, but denies any notion he tried to recruit CB4 to South Beach as the July 1 free-agent frenzy approaches.

“Some of my closest friends happen to be certain guys up in this free-agent market,’’ Flash told reporters in Miami during a weekend promotional event.

“We’ve been friends since we came into the NBA. We signed with the same agent. So, we can’t eat together? No worries. Just friends eating dinner.”

Rudy Gay's ready to answer the bell
Free Agents
Rudy Gay might not be a member of the proposed, star-studded free-agent summit of 2010.

But he plans to be a heavyweight next season.

The Grizzlies' soon-to-be restricted free agent forward has engaged in a training regime earmarked for boxers since the regular season ended. Gay, who is about to enter his fifth NBA season, has taken his offseason workout to another level as he prepares for a USA Basketball training camp next month and a possible maximum contract offer when free agency begins July 1.

"I'm not fighting anyone," Gay said this weekend when reached by phone. "I'm going through the training. There's no more in-shape athlete than a boxer."
